IQOS and menthol ban

From 20th of May 2020, menthol-flavored cigarettes and mentholated cigarette tobacco may not be commercialized. This ban results from the European Union Tobacco Products Directive.


Effective of May 20, 2020 menthol cigarette and mentholated cigarette tobacco will be banned in all European Union markets included Duty free outlets. Accordingly, the above-mentioned products will not be available in Hungary afterwards.

The legal ban on menthol cigarette and mentholated cigarette tobacco does not apply to the following tobacco products:

Alternative tobacco products (e.g. heated tobacco products, such as tobacco sticks prepared for IQOS usage)

Cigarillos

Pipe tobacco

Hookah tobacco

Cigar

Based on the above, tobacco sticks made for IQOS devices are not subject to the EU menthol ban. Menthol ban does not affect tobacco sticks.
